Babak Mahmoudi, PhD

Principal Investigator

bmahmoudi@emory.edu

Dr. Mahmoudi is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Informatics and Biomedical Engineering at Emory University School of Medicine and the Georgia Institute of Technology. His research focuses on the applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning in neuroscience and medicine to better understanding the brain function and develop precision diagnostic and therapeutic technologies for neurological and psychiatric disorders. After training in electrical engineering and signal processing, he transitioned to research in machine learning and neural engineering where he earned a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Florida. He completed a NIH NRSA fellowship in translational neurology at the Emory University prior to joining the faculty of the School of Medicine.

Pradeeban Kathiravelu, PhD

Postdoctoral Scholar

pkathiravelu@alaska.edu

Dr. Kathiravelu is an incoming Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Alaska Anchorage. His research will focus on networking and big data innovations for healthcare, specifically for telehealth access and equity in the circumpolar north. He builds efficient frameworks to schedule and execute biomedical informatics workflows, such as radiology imaging streams and neuroscience pipelines, in research clusters and hybrid clouds. He is researching wide area network enhancements for telehealth access in healthcare deserts. He has an EU Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate in Distributed Computing (EMJD-DC) from INESC-ID Lisboa / Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal and Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium.

Mahmoud Zeydabadinezhad

Graduate Student

mzeydab@emory.edu

Meet Mahmoud, a seasoned biomedical engineer who has distinguished himself through his commitment to research. Holding both undergraduate and master’s degrees in Biomedical Engineering, Mahmoud has specialized in the niche of Magnetic Resonance (MR) image analysis. Before embarking on his doctorate journey, Mahmoud lent his expertise to the Marcus Autism Center. Here, he held the critical role of Research Technical Specialist, where he excelled in devising analytical pipelines for structural and diffusion MRI studies.Currently, Mahmoud is deep in the trenches of his PhD program where he is focused on devising machine learning algorithms, designed to detect biomarkers from biosignals such as EEG, even in studies with limited data.

Parisa Sarikhani

Graduate Student

psarikh@emory.edu

Parisa is a PhD candidate in Computer Science and Informatics Program at the Department of Biomedical Informatics, Emory University. She holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree in electrical engineering from Shiraz University. Parisa’s research revolves around the development of precision neuromodulation therapies using machine learning, reinforcement learning, and optimization techniques. With a focus on designing automated intelligent closed-loop neuromodulation systems, her work aims to facilitate the programming of neuromodulation devices. Her expertise in the intersection of computer science, informatics, and biomedical applications contributes to the advancement of personalized therapies in neurological disorders.

Yusen Zhu

Graduate Student

yusenz@gatech.edu

Yusen is a second year PhD student in Bioengineering Department at Georgia Institute of Technology. He received his MS in BME from Carnegie Mellon University in 2021 and bachelor’s in Integrated Science from Peking University in 2018. Yusen is in general interested in investigating neural activities with data science approach from control, dimension reduction or machine learning. He is focused on implementing codes for platforms developed for these investigations and using them in experiments. When not working, his hobbies are implementing cooking techniques with poorly controlled variables and developing strategies heuristically for the games he play.
